Longevity, Creativity, and Repetition

I had breakfast with a friend the other day.  We were talking about fitness topics (what else is there?) when she had an interesting question.  "How do all these girls with these perfect asses get them to look like that?  I feel like I work my ass off, but I just don't seem to get anywhere near that."

A little background on my friend....she's hot, tall, lean, works out often, eats healthy, drinks minimally, and self-confident.  But just like any of us (myself included), we've all got a couple things that we're self-conscious about.

In my opinion, I told her there are 3 basic keys.

1.  Longevity - It's not so much what these girls do, it's how long they've been doing it.  They've probably been active most of their life one way or another.  They're not your type of girl that will eat whatever they want, drink, smoke, etc, then go on a crash diet and get their shit together within a couple months.

It reminds me of when some knucklehead says something to me like, "You're so lucky you don't have to worry about gaining weight", or "I wish I had genes like you, skinny and lean."  I just bite my toungue and laugh.  What I'd love to say is, "Fool, I've been working out every other day for the past 17 years.  Where's the luck in that?  And the 8 years before that, I was a kid playing sports everyday."  Or, "Yeah, it must suck to not take care of yourself."

Anyway, y'all know I don't take it there.  Life's too short for it.  I'm not saying that getting a perfect ass isn't attainable for someone who hasn't been active all their life.  Anything's possible.  Anything.  What I am saying is, make longevity start today.

2.  Creativity - Do.  Something.  Different.  Don't be a sheep and follow the herd.  If you're doing 5 hours of cardio per week and not happy with the results, don't up your cardio to 10 hours per week.  You're just going to wear yourself out.

"The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result." -Albert Einstein

Be creative and break the norm.  For example, keep the cardio at 5 and replace your desk chair with a balance ball.  You can start off slow, 10 hours per week out of your painful 40.  I started implementing this myself this week, thanks to the inspiration by Matt Hirschbiel.  Using a balance ball will make you sit with better functional posture, otherwise you'll fall off of it.  It will also make you engage the correct muscles.  It'll increase blood flow throughout your body, including to your brain, even making you more effective at work.

You're already sitting at a desk 40 hours a week.  Get a bonus from it.  Get a physical reward from it.  Work out while you're sitting there and be more productive with work at the same time.  It's a no-brainer.

I highly recommend this practice.  I know, I know.  The idea's been out there for years and people will joke you for being a weirdo.  Who cares?  Small price to pay.  Do it and watch your physique improve drastically in a matter of days.

Be creative.  Improve your lifestyle from every angle possible.  Each angle you take will multiply your rate of success multiple times over.

3.  Repetition - Find active things that get you results.  Make sure you enjoy these things.  It's a whole lot easier to be successful at something that you enjoy and are passionate about.  Do these things over and over.  And over.  And over.  And over.

I was reading everything and came across sitting on the ball. I have one in my office and I looked at it, traded seats and put that ball under my butt. I feel like not only does it engage my core but for someone who slouches it helps with my posture. Thanks for the reminder buddy! Keep up the good work!

This is an awesome post because I am a firm believer on longevity and that being the key to a healthy lifestyle. Yeaaaah, it is never too late to start (after all today is a new day), but the earlier you can-the better. I have been into sports since the 4th grade and continue to live an active life. Now as a Mommy remaining active and in great health is extremely important to me; so, that I may always be a great inspiration and role model to my son and encourage him to live an active life full of healthy food and sports. Creating this lifestyle early on, always bears great rewards.
